Researchers estimate that 66% of Americans are overweight or obese. Doctors use the body mass index (BMI) to determine obesity. To lose a pound in one week you need to reduce your calories about 500 per day. A good goal would be to increase activity to burn an extra 250 calories while reducing your food intake by 250 calories. This will result in healthy weight loss that is also more likely to be long term.
A healthy weight loss diet is a low fat diet. Plan to eat a variety of fruits, about 2 cups each day, and vegetables. Women, who are at great risk for osteoporosis, should be certain to get sufficient calcium from dairy products or fortified foods. Whole grains and lean protein round out the diet. Limit saturated fats and salt.
The benefits of a low fat diet will be enhanced by increased physical activity. Spending at least 30 minutes in moderate activity most days of the week will greatly improve your health. Maintaining weight will require 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity almost daily. Remember to consult with your doctor before beginning a physical workout schedule, especially if you have been sedentary very long.
