Researchers estimate that 66% of Americans are overweight or obese. Doctors use the body mass index (BMI) to determine obesity. BMI measure body fat based on height and weight with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 considered overweight and one over 30.0 obese. Most people are overweight from a combination of poor diet and lack of exercise. Excess weight is a leading contributor to potentially fatal conditions including heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cancer, stroke, and osteoarthritis.

A health weight loss program combines a reduction in caloric intake with an increase in physical activity. Avoid programs which promise rapid weight loss as quick weight loss usually does not last. Experts recommend a weight loss diet which results in no more than 2 pounds of weight loss each week. A pound of fat is approximately 3,500 calories. To lose a pound in one week you need to reduce your calories about 500 per day. A good goal would be to increase activity to burn an extra 250 calories while reducing your food intake by 250 calories. This will result in healthy weight loss that is also more likely to be long term.

A healthy weight loss diet is a low fat diet. Plan to eat a variety of fruits, about 2 cups each day, and vegetables. Women, who are at great risk for osteoporosis, should be certain to get sufficient calcium from dairy products or fortified foods. Whole grains and lean protein round out the diet. Limit saturated fats and salt.

The benefits of a low fat diet will be enhanced by increased physical activity. Spending at least 30 minutes in moderate activity most days of the week will greatly improve your health. Maintaining weight will require 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity almost daily. Remember to consult with your doctor before beginning a physical workout schedule, especially if you have been sedentary very long.

A number of diet pills and supplements are available on the market today. Many promise quick weight loss and contain unnatural ingredients and stimulants. These should be avoided. There is no magic pill. Supplements should be used to support a healthy diet and exercise program. Green tea extract has been used for centuries. A powerful antioxidant, green tea may help boost the metabolism and burn fat. For this reason it is included in many weight loss products. Hoodia gordonii has been used in South Africa for many years but has recently gained popularity here. Hoodia comes from a plant and has demonstrated the ability to work as an appetite suppressant. Citrimax is another naturally derived supplement from the garcinia cambogia fruit. Clinical studies indicate it works to suppress appetite and inhibit fat production.
