Vitamins and minerals are available as supplements in an incredible array of sizes, strengths, and combinations. While supplements can’t take the place of whole foods like fruits and vegetables, depending on your individual circumstances they could be a beneficial complement to your regular diet if you have trouble getting enough nutrients.

As micronutrients, your body uses vitamins and minerals in small but steady quantities. Vitamins come from plant and animal sources. There are thirteen vitamins, Vitamins A, C, D, E, H, K and the B vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, B6, B12, and folic acid). Vitamins can be classified as either water soluble or fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins are absorbed easily by the body but the body does not store extra instead passing them through the urine. The water soluble vitamins are the B vitamins plus Vitamin C and H (biotin). Fat soluble vitamins are only utilized when combined with bile acids. Once absorbed, excess fat soluble vitamins are stored in the body. The fat soluble vitamins are A, D, E, and K. Vitamins help convert food to energy and thus play an important role in good health. 

Minerals come from the earth or water. These nutrients comprise the bulk of material for your teeth and bones. They also play an important role in cells and enzymes. They are key to the functioning of nerve impulses and help regulate the balance of fluids.

Many people can get adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals from their diet. However, frequently diets are not well balanced. Those individuals may find that a good multivitamin may help fill in the gap. Certain other conditions may also call for vitamin or mineral supplementation. Pregnant women or those considering pregnancy should take extra folic acid. This has been shown to reduce neural tube defects in infants. Vegetarians and vegans may need B12. Women who are at risk for osteoporosis may be advised to take a calcium and vitamin D supplement. It is important when taking a vitamin supplement to follow directions and not take excessive amounts which can endanger health.
