Vitamin E is not a single vitamin but actually a group of eight antioxidants. Four of the antioxidants are tocopherols and four are tocotrienols. The body maintains only one form, alpha tocopherol, the form found in Vitabase Vitamin E. Vitamin E is fat soluble so it can be stored in the fatty tissues of the body.

Insufficient levels of Vitamin E can result in fatigue, difficulty concentrating, a weakened immune system, anemia, and low thyroid levels. It may also lead to irritability and vision problems. While major deficiency is rare, it is very common to find intake below optimal levels. In a recent national study, 27% of whites, 41% of African-Americans, 28% of Hispanics, and 32% of other ethnic groups had Vitamin E levels below the point generally associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

The main function of Vitamin is as an antioxidant. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals in the body. Free radicals occur as a result of every day metabolism but also as a result of exposure to environmental conditions like pollution or cigarette smoking. The free radicals start a chemical reaction which, if not stopped, can lead to cell death contributing to aging and degenerative diseases. Fats are an important part of the cell membrane which makes the cell particularly vulnerable to free radicals. Because Vitamin E is fat soluble it is uniquely able to neutralize free radicals in that part of the cell. Once it has neutralized a free radical Vitamin E is no longer capable of neutralizing more free radicals but it can regain that ability with help from Vitamin C.

Vitamin E with its strong antioxidant action offers potential support for several conditions. At least five significant studies reported that an increase in Vitamin E intake was associated with a lower incidence of heart attack. In a related issue, studies also found that higher blood levels of Vitamin E corresponded to reduced presence of plaque buildup leading to atherosclerosis.

Your vision may also benefit from adequate Vitamin E consumption. The filmy cover which develops as cataracts may be due in part to free radical damage. Studies indicate a link between Vitamin E and the incidence and severity of cataracts, possibly due to its action as an antioxidant. Vitamin E also appears to contribute to a lower risk of developing macular degeneration.

Vitamin E also appears to effectively enhance the immune system. This is particularly true of specific areas that tend to decline with age. Older patients experienced higher antibody production, better response to infection and improved immune response with an increase in Vitamin E.

Vitamin E – 1000 by Vitabase comes in a softgel capsule. Our vitamin E is in the form of d-alpha-tocopherol. This is the preferred form for optimal use by the body since it is the most bioavailable and requires the least processing by the body.
