The use of saw palmetto for health purposes dates back as far as the 1700s with American Indians. Its use as a treatment for prostate problems was first documented in medical literature in 1926. Since then extensive clinical research has documented saw palmetto’s usefulness in treating the urinary difficulties which accompany Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is the enlargement of the prostate gland. As it swells it places pressure on the urethra resulting in bladder and urinary problems including painful urination, difficulty starting or stopping the flow, and increased nighttime urination. BPH is a common problem in men over 40 and if left undiagnosed or untreated can lead to serious kidney problems.
BPH is thought to be the result of an increase in the ratio of the hormone testosterone to its derivative dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Saw palmetto inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT. It also is believed to limit production of estrogen and progesterone which are associated with DHT. Recent clinical studies have compared the effectiveness of saw palmetto with one of the leading prescription drugs for BPH. Nearly 90% of participants using saw palmetto had measurable improvement after six weeks of use. The prescription drug produced results in less than 50% of participants. In addition, the prescription drug required up to six months to reach maximum effectiveness. A summary of twenty-four European trials conducted since the early 1960s revealed similar results. Over 3,000 men were studied and those using saw palmetto experienced a 28% improvement in urinary tract symptoms, a 24% increase in peak urine flow, and 43% overall improvement.
Saw palmetto may provide some benefits to women. Research is on-going but early results suggest saw palmetto may help stop unwanted body and facial hair growth and treat thinning hair. Some reports indicate it may prevent some types of acne, treat urinary tract infections, and relieve some menstrual symptoms.
