Quercetin is a flavanoid, a group of plant pigments which gives color to fruits, vegetables and flowers. As a group, flavanoids provide a number of potential health benefits from allergy relief to inflammation control. Quercetin can help provide relief of allergy and hay fever symptoms because it blocks the manufacture and release of histamine and other allergy and inflammation substances. Histamine is responsible for allergy symptoms like a runny nose and watery eyes. Quercetin also exhibits anti-inflammatory qualities. Because of this it may inhibit the inflammation that occurs in the joints of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. Fibromyalgia patients have also experienced improvement in symptoms after increasing their dietary intake of flavanoids like Quercetin. Recent studies also indicate Quercetin may provide some relief to men with chronic prostatitis, an inflammation of the prostate gland. Quercetin is also a strong antioxidant. Antioxidants help remove excessive free radicals from the body. Free radicals result from normal body processes but can attack cells and cause damage resulting in early aging and even degenerative diseases.
Quercetin Plus by Vitabase is formulated to not only provide a significant source of Quercetin but to include several other herbs and supplements which work synergistically to improve Quercetin’s effectiveness. Vitamin C is another strong antioxidant. Quercetin helps extend the antioxidant activity of Vitamin C. Research has discovered that the anti-allergy and anti-inflammatory properties of Quercetin are improved when combined with Bromelain, an enzyme from pineapple. Manganese is a mineral and forms part of the enzyme manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD). MnSOD is a powerful antioxidant and among other activities may help protect the joints from damage caused during the inflammation associated with arthritis. Turmeric is a relative of ginger and contains the active ingredient curcumin. Turmeric has garnered increased interest in recent years in Western cultures but has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and has been used to relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis. It also appears to help lower LDL cholesterol which lowers the risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease.
