Policosanol Facts and Information

Policosanol is the generic term used for a mixture of long-chain primary aliphatic saturated alcohols that are derived from the waxes of such plants as sugar cane and yams. Policolsanol is also found in beeswax.

Preliminary studies suggest that policosanol may be very useful for supporting healthy cholesterol levels. There is also evidence that policosanol can reduce platelet aggregation in both healthy and hypercholesterolemic individuals and that it may be of benefit to individuals with intermittent claudication. Claims that it can increase energy levels and boost sexual performance have not been substantiated.

Dosage and Administration

A typical dose of policosanol is 5 milligrams daily taken once a day at dinner time. An effect from this level of supplementation may take up to 3 months to be observed. After this initial dosage the doses can be doubled to 5 milligrams twice a day, taken at both lunch and dinner time. Dosage should not exceed 20 milligrams daily.
