  • Eight water soluble vitamins comprise what is commonly called the B complex. Pantothenic Acid is more commonly referred to as Vitamin B5. As a group, the B vitamins assist the body in converting carbohydrates to glucose to be used for energy. They are necessary for the breakdown of fats and proteins.

In addition to these “basic” functions, Pantothenic Acid plays a unique role as a B vitamin. Vitamin B5 is used in the production of sex and stress related hormones by the adrenal glands as well as the production of red blood cells. Pantothenic Acid helps boost the immune system’s function and aids in helping the body cope with stressful situations. Because of this it is referred to as the “anti-stress” vitamin.

On a more basic physiological level, Pantothenic Acid is a vital part of coenzyme A (CoA), an important enzyme involved in a number of reactions that sustain life. These reactions include generating energy from food, synthesizing essential fats as well as the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and the hormone melatonin. Several drugs and toxins metabolized in the liver require CoA. Because of CoA’s impact on so many vital functions it is easy to see the importance of adequate Pantothenic Acid intake.

Pantothenic Acid is central to another important protein, acyl-carrier protein (ACP). ACP works as an enzyme synthesizing fatty acids. This process is important for effective nerve transmission among other activities.

Some studies indicate Pantothenic Acid may help speed wound healing, particularly after surgery. The effect was most noticeable when combined with Vitamin C.
