Pantethine is an active stable form of Vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid. Normally pantothenic acid must be converted to pantethine before the body can use it. Pantethine is a readily available biologically active form meaning the body can utilize it more quickly.
Pantethine provides the benefits of Vitamin B5 with one significant addition. In clinical trials pantethine effectively helped lower cholesterol levels. In one study pantethine lowered total cholesterol and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol 12%, triglycerides fell 18% and HDL (“good”) cholesterol was raised 9%. An added benefit was the improvement of the ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol. A dose of 300 mg three times a day was the typical dose used to impact cholesterol levels.
Another important function of pantethine is its role as a precursor of Coenzyme A (CoA). CoA is the starting point for the energy production cycle in the cell. Pantethine converted to CoA is necessary to release energy from fats and carbohydrates.
Vitamin B5 as part of the B complex helps provide the many benefits associated with the entire group of 8 water soluble vitamins. Individually, B5 is an essential element in red blood cell production as well as sex and stress-related hormones produced in the adrenal glands. The vitamin also supports the immune system’s activity and helps the body deal with stressful conditions. Because of this it is sometimes called the “anti-stress” vitamin.
Significant deficiency of Vitamin B5 is rare. Since the vitamin is water soluble, the body does not store excess amounts so the daily diet must supply the needed vitamin. Excessive amounts are eliminated through the urine.
