5-HTP

5-HTP by NF Formulas is the immediate precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin, 5-HTP (5-hydroxy-tryptophan). It provides nutritional support for normal sleep and mood. 5-HTP is extracted from the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia, a plant native to the continent of Africa. There are small amounts available in the average diet, mostly in turkey and cheese.

5-HTP’s psychoactive properties are thought to be a result of its effect on serotonin synthesis in the central nervous system. It is theorized that an artificially enhanced amount of 5-HTP causes the brain to increase production of serotonin. It is thought that the more serotonin is produced, the more it will be released.

5-HTP has shown promise in the treatment of depression, chronic daily headaches and fibromyalgia. Those with fibromyalgia mention improved sleep and mood, as well as a reduction in pain and other symptoms. Additionally, there has been research into its use on children who have night terrors. There is a reported decrease in their occurrence after 5-HTP therapy.
