Milk Thistle Liquid

Milk thistle has been used to treat the liver as far back as the first century Romans. In modern day research, milk thistle is believed to help protect the liver from the harmful effects of alcohol, viruses, toxins, and even certain drugs. (This protection is primarily provided by an active substance found in milk thistle called silymarin.) Milk thistle contains potent antioxidant properties and especially protects the liver and kidneys from dangerous free radicals. Milk thistle also supports the body’s production of new liver cells to replace old unhealthy or damaged cells.

The U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reviewed 5 out of 7 studies geared toward finding the effects of milk thistle on alcoholic liver disease, and found through comparison that the supplement greatly improved the function of the liver. Other research has shown that a daily intake of milk thistle increases survival rates for those suffering from cirrhosis. Milk thistle is also often given to patients who have had liver damage, or who are around substances that are harmful to the liver, such as lead.
