Magnesium is an essential mineral for human health. While most people do not know much about the mineral, magnesium plays a significant role in everyday health. It is needed for more than 300 metabolic reactions which take place in your body. Every major biological process needs magnesium including the production of energy on the cellular level. Muscle contractions, nerve conduction, and cellular membrane integrity all rely on magnesium.
Even though appropriate levels of magnesium are available through the diet, it is not unusual to find less than optimal levels. This could be due to poor eating choices. There are also several lifestyle choices which can lead to low magnesium levels. Diets which include too much coffee, soda, salt or alcohol can lead to decreased levels. Heavy menstrual periods, excessive sweating, or prolonged stress can also cause problems.
In addition to everyday processes, how else can magnesium impact your health? Doctors use magnesium to treat some cardiac arrhythmias and also eclampsia in pregnant women. Perhaps one of magnesium’s most important functions comes from its close interrelationship with calcium. Magnesium helps regulate the flow of calcium between cells. In this function, magnesium may play a role in preventing osteoporosis. Studies have shown that children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have low levels of magnesium as much as 95% of the time. At least one study showed that children with ADHD who were magnesium deficient demonstrated marked improvement after six months of magnesium supplementation. Research also indicates magnesium supplementation may aid some people who suffer from migraines. Preliminary evidence points to magnesium potentially helping with PMS, Type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. More research is needed to verify these functions.
To help improve absorption in the body, this supplement is chelated (key lāt id). Chelation is a process whereby the mineral (in this case magnesium) is bonded to nitrogen to protect it from interacting with other compounds.
