Inositol is often linked to the Vitamin B complex and is sometimes referred to as Vitamin B8. The nutrient is found in all tissue with the highest concentrations in the heart and brain. In the body inositol is a fatty lipid used for cell membrane formation. Inositol affects nerve transmission and works through the liver to help the body transport fats.

Inositol plays a role in the function of the brain neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin is a known factor in depression so inositol has been tested for several brain-related disorders.

In small studies inositol produced favorable results in treating depression and panic disorder. It was also found to be effective in relieving symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder. Preliminary evidence also points to inositol’s potential benefit in treating bipolar disorder and bulimia.

Inositol also has demonstrated good promise in relieving some symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In the study women with PCOS were given 100 mg of inositol twice daily for 14 weeks. At the end of the study those taking the inositol experienced improvement in ovulation frequency as well as benefits in weight loss and HDL cholesterol. Some researchers believe inositol may possibly help treat attention deficit disorder (ADD).
