Many of the popular herbal supplements today began as elements of traditional medicinal systems in places like China and India. Gotu kola is a prime example. Both Ayurvedic (India) and Chinese practitioners have used it for centuries. In India it was prescribed to promote energy, endurance, and mental stamina. This perennial grows in India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, South Africa, China, Indonesia, Australia, and North America. Most extracts today come from Madagascar.

The potential benefits of using gotu kola have been confirmed by modern research. Many benefits come from gotu kola’s apparent ability to improve circulation. Circulation improved in the brain and the extremities. Gotu kola had positive effects on varicose veins, poor circulation in the legs, leg cramps, and leg swelling. It also reduced vein hardening and helped improve blood flow through the veins. These effects were seen in 80% of patients in a clinical study complete in the late 1980s.

Improved circulation may account for gotu kola’s affects on the nervous system. Some users believe gotu kola can positively impact memory. The herb relaxes the central nervous system resulting in a calming effect. At the same time gotu kola stimulates the brain to focus better.

Despite its name, gotu kola is not related to the kola nut. It contains no caffeine. It is a member of the parsley family.
