Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. Nearly 20 million Americans are diagnosed with OA. In healthy individuals cartilage in the joints lets the bones glide painlessly over each other. The cartilage absorbs the energy produced by physical movement. OA results in the breakdown and wearing away of the cartilage. The bones begin to rub together resulting in pain, swelling, and reduced ease of movement. OA develops most frequently in the hands, knees, hips, and spine.

Glucosamine is central to cartilage construction. It occurs naturally in the body and prompts the fabrication of glycosaminoglycans. These are a key structural element of cartilage. Glucosamine is also required for the cartilage to assimilate sulfur, another necessary element for building and repairing cartilage.

In repeated studies glucosamine has demonstrated a number of potential benefits for osteoarthritis sufferers. Glucosamine was shown to effectively reduce pain. Although it takes longer to reach maximum effectiveness, glucosamine was as effective as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen without the same side effects such as stomach upset, diarrhea, or cramps. Glucosamine‘s effect lasted longer as well. Glucosamine also improved function and mobility. OA generally affects the weight bearing joints like knees and hips. Glucosamine helped improve range of motion and reduced joint stiffness. Finally, glucosamine helped slow, and in some cases stop, progression of joint destruction. To achieve these results glucosamine was taken consistently for three years or longer.
