Ginger, a spice grown in fertile, tropical soil, has been used in cooking for over 4,000 years. Its use in traditional Chinese, Indian and Arabic herbal medicine goes back almost as far. The Chinese, for example, have used it for thousands of years to help with digestion, nausea, and stomach upset. The root is the part of the plant used in most supplements and contains volatile oils and the phenol compounds gingerols and shogaols which are believed to be the active ingredients responsible for ginger’s action. Studies conducted beginning in the 1980s confirmed ginger’s usefulness as a digestive aid.

Ginger has found application in counteracting nausea and even vomiting in several situations. Numerous studies have shown ginger to helpful in diminishing symptoms of motion sickness without the side effects seen with medications. According to other studies up to 1 gram of ginger each day can help provide relief of nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy. Some studies appear to indicate that ginger may help reduce the severity and duration of nausea from chemotherapy and surgery. More research is needed to further delineate when ginger is effective in these situations.

Besides helping with digestive problems like nausea, ginger may have other helpful uses. Ginger has a long history of use in combating inflammation. It is often used to treat problems associated with inflammation from arthritis and ulcerative colitis. One study of individuals with osteoarthritis in the knees found daily ginger reduced pain and the need for pain-killing medication. Ginger is thought to have anti-bacterial effect reducing harmful intestinal bacteria like E. coli and Streptococcus while supporting the helpful bacteria Lactobacillus. Because of the antibacterial properties, ginger may proved helpful in fighting ulcers caused by Heliobacter pylori. Ginger liquid can also be made into a tea to help relieve coughs. The pungent taste of ginger releases secretion to help throat congestion.
