ginger as antioxidant
Hi Dr. Passero, I have one question for you that I really want to know about it. When someone has a dental implant and is concerned about aging/oxidative damage because of that metal in her mouth, do you think that ginger can be used as antioxidant in dental implant patient? tq Dr.Passero for your concern.
Ginger is a great antioxidant however most of the metals used for dental implants are not highly reactive and are not likely to cause any significant oxidative damage. The same is true for the metals used in other prosthetic applications like artificial hips, knees, ankles or screws used to set broken bones. Most often titanium is used which as mentioned is not highly reactive.
Now, it is not harmful to take some additional antioxidants just in case this particular person is having a stronger reaction to the implant. Antioxidants will protect us from oxidative damage from the sun, air pollution and from oxidation that occurs as a natural result of our body's natural processes. Ginger, as previously mentioned is a very gentle, well tolerated herb that does have potent antioxidant properties. She could also consider a green tea extract, curcumin or grape seed extract. All of these are well tolerated and have potent antioxidant capabilities.
In health,
Dr. Passero
