Curamin & Blood Pressure
I just started taking curamin to replace Celebrex and Tylenol #3. It seems to be working fine but my blood pressure is very low. I take medication for high blood pressure. Does curamin interfere with blood pressure or b.p. medication?
Curcumin, also known as Turmeric, has been widely studied
for its anti-inflammatory actions.
Compounds in this herb called curcuminoids work in the body to block inflammation
by inhibiting the COX 2 enzyme which promotes the production of certain
molecules that promote inflammation. It
has also shown the ability to reduce the production of something called NF-kappaB
which also plays a critical role in promoting inflammation.
No known compounds in curcumin have yet been discovered for their
specific affects relating to blood pressure.
Nor has there been any significant data or findings to suggest that it might
interfere with pharmaceuticals like blood pressure medications.
Excessive inflammation in the body can contribute to
elevations of blood pressure. So, if the
curcumin is helping to reduce your pain by lowering inflammation it may be
having a similar affect on your blood pressure.
Before you change anything in regards to your curcumin supplement or
blood pressure medication I would recommend you continue to monitor your
pressures on a regular basis for several days.
If your readings continue to be low you should consult your doctor right
away about how to appropriately modify your prescriptions. Also, try to identify any other new behaviors
or changes you have made in your life that might be affecting your blood
pressure. For instance, it may be possible that the
other medications you were taking were increasing your blood pressure and now
that you have replaced with curcumin your readings are coming down.
