The digestive system makes available to the body the nutrients necessary for life. If it is not functioning properly the effects will be felt in nearly every other body system. The digestive system consists of a series of hollow tubes beginning with the mouth and ending with the anus. Major components include the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine or colon. During digestion, digestive enzymes, acid, hormones, and beneficial bacteria work to break down food and release nutrients for absorption in the small intestine. The colon or large intestine completes the process by removing excess water and completing absorption of vital nutrients.

Diet will affect the effectiveness and functioning of the digestive system. Incorporate plenty of water and food high in dietary fiber to maximize colon efficiency and prevent constipation. Proper diet may also lessen symptoms of digestive problems like irritable bowel syndrome or diverticulitis. 

Constipation is a common problem, particularly given wide-spread poor eating habits. Natural remedies include herbal laxatives like senna, cape aloe, or cascara sagrada. Fiber products like psyllium husk can also help restore regularity. The bowel contains both beneficial and harmful bacteria which may get out of balance resulting in constipation or diarrhea. Probiotics are natural supplements which help restore the levels of good bacteria which may be killed off by antibiotic use. Lactobacillus acidophilus is the most well-known probiotic and is readily available in over-the-counter supplements. Many individuals find a natural colon cleanser to be a boost to their sense of well being. Most colon cleansers are a combination of dietary fiber and natural laxative products. Homeopathic doctors recommend a colon cleansing once or twice each year. Colon cleansing works in both the small intestine and the colon or large intestine helping restore regularity.
