Coenzyme Q 10 or CoQ10 is a nutrient found in every cell in the body. It is found in the mitochondria which is the energy producing center of the cell and is involved making ATP, the major energy source for the cell. In fact, 95% of the human body’s energy requirements are converted using CoQ10. In general, CoQ10 helps boost energy, enhance the immune system, and function as an antioxidant.
As an antioxidant, CoQ10 helps neutralize free radicals in the body before they damage the cell. Free radicals occur naturally in the body as a result of normal processes but their numbers can be increased by exposure to ultraviolet light, radiation, cigarette smoking or air pollution. Free radical damage contributes to aging and may contribute to degenerative diseases. The antioxidant capabilities are enhanced by the inclusion of Vitamin C, another powerful antioxidant.
CoQ10 holds promise for supporting good health in several other areas. Scientists have studied its affects on heart disease. CoQ10 helps prevent and treat heart disease through its ability to improve energy production in the cells, by inhibiting blood clot formation, and through its antioxidant capabilities. Studies have shown that heart attack victims who received CoQ10 within three days of the attack were less likely to suffer a second heart attack or experience chest pain.
In Europe, Japan, Canada, and Russia, doctors prescribe CoQ10 to help treat Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). CHF occurs when the heart is unable to pump blood effectively. CoQ10 supplementation resulted in a reduction of fluid on the legs. Breathing improved as fluid in the lungs decreased. In turn, patients saw their exercise capacity increase.
Other studies indicate CoQ10 may be beneficial to some migraine headache sufferers. A number of clinical studies have examined CoQ10’s effectiveness in supporting healthy blood pressure levels. A meta-analysis of all the studies revealed CoQ10 lowered the systolic number up to 17 mg Hg and the diastolic number up to 10 mg Hg
