CoEnzyme Q 10, called CoQ10 for short, is an important but relatively unknown nutrient. Most people are familiar with vitamins and minerals, but many have never heard of CoQ10 and are unfamiliar with the crucial role it plays in our bodies. Found in every cell, CoQ10 is utilized by the mitochondrion for energy production. ATP is the primary source of energy for the cell and CoQ10 is required to produce ATP. CoQ10 plays a role in production of 95% of the energy required by the body. CoQ10 also impacts the immune system.
One of CoQ10’s significant contributions comes as an antioxidant. Normal metabolic processes, like breathing, along with exposure to environmental conditions such as smoking, pollution, and even sunlight, result in free radical production. A free radical is essentially a molecule that is short an electron. To restore balance it “steals” an electron from another molecule, making it deficient. This begins a chain reaction which eventually results in the cell dying. This contributes to the aging process and to the development of degenerative conditions like heart disease. Antioxidants like CoQ10 neutralize free radicals and help prevent damage.
The antioxidant action of CoQ10 plays significantly in its ability to help prevent heart disease. Clinical studies have verified CoQ10’s effectiveness. CoQ10 helps stop the formulation of blood clots and improves heart cells’ energy production. CoQ10 given within three days of a heart attack resulted in a significant reduction of second heart attacks and chest pains, according to one study.
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) results in the heart not pumping effectively. Consequently fluid can build up in the extremities and lungs. CoQ10 can help treat CHF. Currently some European countries, Japan, Canada, and Russia use CoQ10 as a prescription drug treatment for CHF. CHF patients on CoQ10 experienced a reduction in fluid in the legs and lungs and an increased ability to exercise.
Other studies show promise for using CoQ10 in helping relieve migraine headaches. In addition, numerous studies confirm that regular use of CoQ10 can help maintain blood pressure levels. Learn more...
