Biotin is one of the B-complex vitamins and is also known as Vitamin H. As a water soluble vitamin the body does not store it so it must be included in the diet. The role of Biotin is still being studied but is importance is already known in several areas.
Biotin is an important factor in the workings of several enzyme processes. Biotin helps enzymes synthesize fatty acids, metabolize leucine (an essential amino acid), and metabolize cholesterol and amino acids. Biotin also works with an enzyme in the formation of glucose from sources other than carbohydrates.
Biotin supplementation shows promise in several areas of health. Low biotin levels are often detected in diabetics. Lack of biotin appears to result in impaired use of glucose. In clinical studies increased biotin intake resulted in lower blood glucose levels. Biotin was originally discovered to improve split hoofs in horses so scientists studied its effects on human nails. In limited clinical studies brittle fingernails showed improvement. Supplementation resulted in thicker nails and reduced splitting. Biotin deficiency can result in hair loss so biotin is often suggested for healthy hair support. Learn more...
