For over 2,000 years propolis has been a staple for natural health care provides. Its natural antibiotic properties were beneficial in treating wounds. Today bee propolis is often used to help boost immune function.
Propolis is found in the hive where it is used to seal the enclosure. Bees use it to caulk and fill small holes and cracks. This prevents unwanted invasions. Bees collect resin from tree bark and leaves and combine it with pollen, wax, and nectar to make propolis. The sticky substance also helps remove undesirable organisms as bees enter the hive.
Propolis is a rich source of nutrients and more than 180 compounds have been found present in propolis. It contains all the vitamins except for Vitamin K, and important minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. Propolis also contains significant levels of flavonoids. This important nutrient (sometimes called Vitamin P) is believed to account for many of the benefits attached to propolis. They are powerful antioxidants capable of neutralizing destructive free radicals. Propolis has been found to be active against bacteria, viruses, and other micro-organisms.
