Alpha Lipoic Acid - A Powerful Antioxidant

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) was first identified as a nutrient in the 1950s. The body needs ALA to produce energy in the cells. It was initially believed to be a vitamin but in 1988 it was identified as a powerful antioxidant. The extent of its power is still being explored but already scientists have declared it a stronger antioxidant than Vitamin C or E.

Free radicals are a natural by-product of bodily processes like breathing. Their numbers can be increased by exposure to everyday pollutants, cigarette smoke, or even the sun. Free radicals can affect healthy cells and may lead to aging and degenerative diseases. There are several unique qualities to ALA that make it a particularly potent antioxidant.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is capable of neutralizing free radicals in both the fatty and watery regions of a cell. By contrast, Vitamin C is only water soluble and Vitamin E is only fat soluble. In the cell some of ALA is converted to dihydrolipoic acid, an even more potent antioxidant. Both of these forms work on an especially dangerous free radical, peroxynitrate.

This free radical contains both oxygen and nitrogen and plays a role in the development of atherosclerosis, lung disease, and neurological disorders. Alpha Lipoic Acid is used by the body to produce glutathione, another antioxidant, which helps the body recycle Vitamin C and extend its life as an antioxidant. Glutathione cannot be obtained through a supplement but must be made by the body using ALA.

ALA has been approved for use in Germany to treat diabetes. It is used to counteract peripheral neuropathy, commonly seen in diabetics. In addition, Alpha Lipoic Acid increases the removal of glucose from the blood stream and reduces insulin resistance. Learn more...
